The origins of Friday

Friday, the key to the weekend. The meaning and origins of the days of the week.

Friday the fifth day of the week, between Thursday and Saturday.

The name Friday comes from the Old English frigedaeg, meaning the day of Frige the Anglo-Saxon form of Frigg, a Germanic translation of Latin dies Veneris, "day of Venus."

In most Germanic languages Friday is named after Freyja, such as Freatag in Old High German, Freitag in Modern German, Freyjudagr in Old Norse, Vrijdag in Dutch, Fredag in Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish. In many European languages Friday is derived from Latin dies Veneris, "day of Venus" such as vendredi in French, venerdì in Italian, viernes in Spanish, and vineri in Romanian.

In the majority of Indian languages, Friday is Shukravar, named for Shukra, the Sanskrit name of the planet Venus.

Russian uses a number for this day of the week, piatnìtsa, meaning fifth, in Portuguese it is sexta-feira, the sixth day.
