  • 2nd October 1869 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) born in Porbander, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, Western India.
    He led the movement that led India to independence, by advocating civil disobedience and non violent protest.
    His birthday is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • Adolf Hitler born April 20th 1889, in the small Austrian village of Braunau Am Inn. Hitler was leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party and went on to become Chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and as head of state of Germany (Führer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945.
  • January 21st 1950, author of Animal Farm and 1984 George Orwell died.
    The writer, born Eric Arthur Blair in June 1903 assumed his pseudonym, inspired by the River Orwell, near his parent's house in Suffolk, to spare his family embarrassment. He died after a three-year battle against tuberculosis.
  • 3rd April 1954, Oxford University wins the 100th Boat Race in rough conditions on the River Thames.
    The first Oxford and Cambridge boat race took place on 10 June 1829 which Oxford won.
